A Hot New Way to Ride!

We just rolled back into town ready to formally close out the summer and bring in the fall.  And guess who rolled in all hip in a front facing car seat for the first time?  ANDERSON!

It's really great because for the first time ever, Holly and I can turn around and see the smiling faces of all three of our boys in the mini-van.  Another big step for ya And! We're proud of you!

Tunes!

This should be the last robo-post.  I wanted to share a tale about our little man Carter.

Carter and his newborn cousin in 2012
(Just a good pic, nothing to do with the post.)
Last week, Carter rode down with me to pick up my racing packet for the Green Lakes 50K.  We had a grand time getting the packet, picking up supplies at Target, and getting McDonald's milkshakes. (I selected vanilla; he selected strawberry.)  We were listening to the radio on the trip.  Now, Carter is the most radio sensitive of our children.  He learns lyrics quickly and knows the songs he likes.  So I enjoyed it when we were almost home and Katy Perry's new single, "Roar", came on.  Carter was loving it and was singing along with the chorus.  When we pulled up to the house, he said, "Dad, Dad!  Don't stop the song.  Wait till it's over."  So we sat in the car outside the house so Carter could finish hearing Katy Perry roar.  When it was over he said, "Okay, thanks, Dad."  Then we went inside and added the song to his Spotify playlist.  He's such a great kid.  Maybe he'll start a band on his own someday.

Parker digs his tunes too!
Parker had a similar experience months ago with Thrift Shop by Macklemore.  He had heard it on the radio and kept singing to himself, "I got twenty-dollars in my pocket!"  We couldn't figure out why he was saying this until we connected it to the song.  So that got added to his Spotify list (the clean, radio edit, of course!)

That's the last robo-post!  We should be back by now and ready to report on the Labor Day weekend adventures!

Great Expectations!

I finished reading Great Expectations the other day.  I recently made it a goal to read (and reread in some cases) all of Charles Dickens' novels.  The last time I read Great Expectations I was in ninth grade.  I was surprised at how much I had forgotten.  I find reading to be a therapeutic experience; I always gain impression and insights worth remembering.

Charles Dickens after Anderson
If I may share one: Mr. Wemmick in Great Expectations I feel is a lot like me.  He utterly divides his life in two.  He has his (almost soulless) work for Mr. Jaggers, but he also enjoys a warm, eccentric home life. He intentionally never mixes the two.  I feel I am the same way.  When at work I rarely seem to think about home, and while at home, I rarely seem to think about work.  It seems to work well for Mr. Wemmick, and it seems to work well for me.

I started my next Dickens' text the other day: Little Dorrit.  This is NOT a reread; I have never read it before.  I project to be done by November by reading at least a chapter a day.  Look for a full report then!

Cars!

Did you know we used to drive a Saturn Ion?  Yup, we did!  Here is the last picture of it before picking up our mini-van in 2011, a few months before Anderson was born.  Why am I posting a hot car pic today? Because it is Holly's birthday!  And someday, when we are are rich, I'll by her an even newer one, well, if the song proves true anyway.  (We'll see how her real birthday went when we get back into town.)

Diapers!

Without question, one of the best child-rearing decisions we ever made was to cloth diaper.  Not only has it saved us a lot of money, but it also just makes diapering more fun.  We enjoy collecting the different designs and styles.  Case in point: notice the black diaper with white writing in the right corner of the diaper mosaic above.  That one is called "Albert" and it was my pick!  We are going out of town and will need to switch to disposables for a few days to help out our parents (who are not cloth diaper fans.)  Holly and I always feel weird doing that because we feel like we are putting newspaper on Anderson's bottom.  Fortunately, we will be back by Labor Day and able to use the cloth diapers once again!

Flowers for Mom

Parker and Carter finally got out of the house yesterday.  While Anderson took a nap, I loaded the boys in the trusty wagon and pulled them up the hill to the park.  They had fun dividing their time between the swings (where I pushed them higher and higher on request) and the splash park.  On the swings, they like it when they get pushed so high that they "wiggle."  In the splash park, they road on my shoulders seeing how many times that could walk under the falling water. (Parker made it to 109.) On the way back, Carter picked flowers for mom, something he always does on his way home from the park. Two yellow and and a lavender once, as you can see below. We then had Pad Thai for dinner, which mom and dad enjoyed, but the boys didn't particularly enjoy.

We will be going out of town soon, so I will be robo-posting again.  We have lots of Labor Day weekend stuff to accomplish.  See ya in a few days!
