Day 7 (July 1)
Finally! The nurses at St. Joe’s indicated that the doctors felt Ian was okay to go home the next day! Just two things needed to be completed before he could be released. He needed to pass his hearing test and receive his hepatitis B vaccination. I blame myself here as a mother for not having been completely educated on vaccines.
Fact: It is suggested that infants get the hepatitis B shot before they leave the hospital. It is not required. Fact: You can work out your own vaccination schedule and guidelines with your pediatrician. Fact: You can order vaccines directly from the drug company with fewer additives and in single doses. Fact: An infant’s immune system is very weak at birth.
This is Ian hours after his HepB shot :This is Ian 9 days after the HepB vaccine :
This is why I am such an advocate for people to educate themselves.
You DO NOT HAVE to get the HepB in the hospital!!!
Unless your baby is at high risk-- postpone it!!
"Hepatitis B virus is transmitted by contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person."

Thanks for posting this. I completely agree and I regret it every day that I let the nurses at Crouse pressure me to do it for Cameron. They called me neurotic.
Most 1 day old newborns are not at risk especially of they are not having sex and they are not doing street drugs while sharing needles.
OH my gosh. How utterly heart-breaking. Those photos just break my heart.
Holy smokes I had NO IDEA! That would be painful to watch your newborn go through.
Thank for spreading the word. I will educate myself from here on out.
Ugh. So sad. Luke was NOT supposed to get it but the stupid nurse gave it to him on ACCIDENT! She got fired. Freaking medical errors.
whoa ... i had no idea. so, he passed away JUST because he has the shot? There wasn't anything else wrong with him?!
that's crazy. I will have to remember this whenever we have another baby! that's scary!
That is so sad. And I had no idea. I hate to say it but I can't tell you what shots the girls had at the hospital. This time I'm going to make sure I know before ANYTHING is given.
